First, the fossil fuels are depleting at a rapid rate and are harder to retrieve. The consequences is the possibility of an energy crisis in the nearest future. According to BP Statistical Review of World Energy, the petroleum reserves are estimated to 1047 billion barrels, enough to cover consumption for the next 41 years. According to the same review, the natural gas reserves of 156 trillions m³ will be enough for the next 61 years.
Meanwhile, the energy prices will sky rocket and will be scarcely available for many of us.
Second, the fossil fuels widely used today are harmful for the environment. The negative effects are visible so far today. The earth is warming up and climate is changing dramatically fast.
The humanity needs to find alternative solutions and use
them to their full potential. The above problems can be solved
fundamentally by using renewable energy resources.
All of these are widely available on our planet – water,
wind power, geothermal energy, sun rays, hot springs – and
easily convertible to electricity. These energy sources are
abundant and free to use.
Republic of Moldova and the renewable energy
The major problems of the Republic of Moldova are lack of own energy resources (97% of energy is imported), excessive dependence on natural gas, imported from a single supplier, low usage of renewable energy sources, insufficient capabilities for generating electricity, high level of losses in electricity and heating sectors, low energy effectiveness ratio and dilapidated condition of the major part of the energy infrastructure. There were enacted several legislative acts providing legal basis for implementation of renewable energy projects (Renewable energy Law, Government Decree on renewable energy utilization, Government Decree on Energy Strategy of Republic of Moldova to 2020 year). However, much is to be done in the near future.
